Bright shiny candy-apple red crème

This polish is from Orly’s “‘Tis The Season” 2010 holiday collection. I’ve only bought it recently, so it’s still available and easily accessible.

It’s a beautiful red crème. The formula is great – it is Orly after all – and it was practically opaque after just one coat. I applied another one to see if it would ad more depth to it, but honestly it didn’t. So if you’re careful with the application, it could quite easily be a one coater. Drying time between the coats is alright though, so personally I think I’ll stick with two coats in future manis too. :)

Here it is – no top coat. Look at that shine, isn’t it just amazing?! The picture is taken in the sun and is pretty colour accurate. I love reds like this!

I knew I wouldn’t leave it like that. I wanted to stamp on it. I picked an all nail design on a plate called H22 and stamped with a black no name stamping polish. I like this stamping plate. The all nail designs are more than big enough to cover the entire thumb nail.

Here’s what it looks like with one coat of Orly’s Polishield 3-in-1 top coat. But I won’t be using this top coat for stamped nails again – it pulls on the design and even though I don’t really notice it in real life, it annoys me.

Clear base packed with purple and blue glitters

I wanted to wear this polish on its own, but after having applied the first coat I realized that I might as well give that up right away and layer it over another polish. Otherwise it would possibly have made me sit up all night and half the following day applying layer after layer to make it opaque.

So I started with one coat of Essence’s “Black is back”, which is a black crème. This glided on easily and almost covered properly in one coat. Had I been wearing it on its own I would have applied a second coat, but since it was only working as underwear for Overdose, I couldn’t be bothered. Drying time for this Essence was surprisingly on the slow side. It’s the first time I’ve experienced that with an Essence product.

Anyway, this post isn’t about Essence, so I applied two very easy coats of Overdose. The glitter spread out easily, no problems with it at all. Drying time was again a bit on the slow side, but not dramatically boring. :D

Here’s how it looks. Two coats of L. A. Girl’s Overdose and one coat of Poshé top coat:

The name “Rock Star” is definitely well picked, in my opinion. I love this mani!

Fresh green base with holographic glitters and bars

To describe this colour green seems almost impossible to me. It’s not grass green, it’s lighter than that, but it would be wrong to call it pale green, because it’s nothing like that either. So I guess you’ll have to just look at the pics to see what kind of green I’m talking about.

The formula is quite good, the polish glided on pretty easily, but it had the tendency to pull the glitters down over the nail, letting them all sit at the tip of the nails. A little pushing around solves that little problem though. Drying time is a bit on the boringly slow side, although it’s not the worst polish I’ve got in that respect.

It was opaque after two coats, but the colour did not at all suit my skin tone, so I added a third coat. That actually helped. It made the green a bit darker and deeper, and became acceptable. :)

I actually had dotting in mind with this mani, but I couldn’t find my dotting tool, and while looking for it I dented three of the nails pretty badly. Argh!! So I soon gave up trying to make that look any better, and I didn’t want to waste any more of my time with dots.

A girl can never have too many Color Club nail polishes in my opinion. I don’t quite know how many I’ve got, so let’s just say I’ve got a number of them. :D

Red velvet is one of those polishes I just knew I had to have when I saw it. Dark, vampy, delicious!

The formula is great – it is a Color Club after all, and the mani was opaque in two easy coats. It dried up a little bit funny – not gritty as such or bumpy, but it didn’t look smooth either. I didn’t care though; any top coat can solve that little problem.

I wish that the red colour was a bit more prominent than it actually is. I would certainly have given it a coat of something sparkly, if it wasn’t for the fact that I had other plans for this mani. I was going out to an event where the theme was something with vampires, so I wanted to spice it up a little bit. I can’t draw though, so I went for stamping. I used Konad stamping plate M21 and Konad’s white stamping polish. I placed the stamp randomly on each nail. Here’s that step:

And then I took Jesse’s Girl’s Magenta polish, which is a sheer magenta, and painted a thin coat over the whole thing, so that the splatters went red.

I think it looks pretty cool!And it went perfectly with the vampire theme! :)

There are lots of brands you can’t buy in my part of the world – so I am very grateful for internet shopping. I bought this red polish from Sinful Colors online, and even with the price being doubled because of the postage, it’s still cheap compared to how much a good nail polish costs here.

Sugar Sugar is from the Holiday 2011 Wish collection and it’s a gorgeous shimmery red. It isn’t quite as shimmery as the bottle implies though, but I don’t have a problem with that. I have my own ways of adding bling to a mani!

The formula was good and easy to work with. I was pleasantly satisfied with how it looked after two coats.

Moving on to the bling!

I chose a silver glitter from B. O. called 71. The silver bits are in various sizes, so I was curious to find out how much fishing I would have to do to get the big chunks moving.

As it happens, they came out pretty easily. The problem was actually to get them to leave the brush. There was a lot of pushing around with the brush before they actually ended on the nail. That could quite easily have been annoying.

Here’s how it ended up looking, with a layer of Poshé top coat:

I’ll definitely recommend a layer of top coat between the base colour and the silver chunks, to protect the colour from the pushing around and smearing with the brush.

New Frankens

I made three frankenpolishes the other day, and I thought it would be cool to share the pics of them here on my blog. 

None of them have got names yet. Suggestions are welcome and will be appreciated! 

First one up is glittery red. This is the franken with the thinnest formula and the one that needs to be shaken the most to mix the glitter before applying. It went on pretty smoothly though, and it took two coats before I was satisfied. It's jelly-ish, but not completely. The glitter doesn't feel lumpy or bumpy at all. I really like this one!

Next one up is purple. There's two different colours of purple glitter in it, and one of them shifts to red and pink in certain light. The formula is lumpy because of the glitter, and it really likes to be covered in a thick layer of top coat. Two coats as well: 

The last one is blueish/greenish - not really sure how to describe the colour, but I love it! The formula is great, it took two easy coats to reach full opacity. This polish contains holographic silver glitter as well. This is my favourite of the three: 

I wear Essence XXXL Shine top coat over all three polishes.

Deep, vampy purple with red undertones

This is my only Make Up Store nail polish. They are pretty expensive here – about US$22 for a bottle, which is a bit more than I’m usually willing to pay. But there was a small sale going on in my local mall a couple of months ago, which meant I could buy this polish half price. Count me in! I love sales :D

The formula was good, neither too runny nor too thick, and application was easy, even though I made a big mess. I was the only one to blame for that though, the polish was totally innocent! ;) It took two coats to reach opacity, which is great. I didn’t apply a top coat.

Next thing up was to apply a little something extra. You should know me by now – that’s the way I work.

Kleancolor has made a range of holo top coats. The Chunky Holo Purple looked interesting enough to suit Vanja. It’s a clear purple base with extremely holographic glitter. It was nice’n easy to apply, and then whenever I moved my fingers it was like a little rainbow kept turning up - red, orange, yellow and green! It’s amazing.

Here’s one coat of Chunky Holo Purple over Vanja and a layer of Seche Vite top coat:

I’m very pleasantly surprised over this mani. What do you think?

Clear base packed with red and silver glitter

I’ve got four Gem Crush polishes, and this is the second one I’ve tried on. The first one was “Bejewelled”, and you can read about it here. 

The formula is just the same in this one, quite thick but nonetheless nice’n easy to work with anyway. I don’t think I could have made the polish drip from the brush even if I wanted to! The brush is wide, very wide, but luckily manageable for me. I believe my nail beds are pretty average in size, but if yours are narrower then you might find it somewhat difficult not to spread polish all over the place with this big fat, flat brush.

It’s opaque in two coats and this colour is so much more me than the first one I tried.

Here’s a shot in my light box:

I wear one generous coat of Seche Vite top coat here, but this polish is so top coat thirsty that I actually added a second one after a little while. And it still wasn’t smooth. I don’t mind that so much though.

Look at that glitter, isn’t it just amazing?! I’m stunned! And very happy with it.

It chipped like crazy after less than 24 hours. Bummer!

So, I'm really honoured to be a guest blogger here on Rainbowify Me's blog :) Personally, I really enjoy reading this blog, so I'll try to live up to the standards, haha!

I remember when crackle polish got really popular back in 2010/11, and I wanted to get with the trend, but I never got into it before later - and I thought it was extremely difficult to find good crackle polishes. And now I'm kind of bored with it. It's hard to find cool crackle manis, but I've seen  this a couple of times and I'm in love! I decided to try it myself.

It's basically a series of stripes in six different colours  and then a crackle polish on top to finish it off! I used blue, green, pink, orange, yellow and purple. First a picture of the finished result: 

The black crackle gives a nice contrast to the soft rainbow colours. It also makes the transition  more blended and smooth to look at. I must say that I really love this manicure!

Now for a picture of the process. I think it's better to apply just a coat of white nail polish underneath, just for the sake of opacity, but I didn't. I just applied one stripe of each nail polish. It's a mess to clean up because you actually sweep the polish across the nail. 

As I said, it's very messy, but you can see that it's also not perfectly applied. It doesn't matter, you won't be able to tell when the crackle comes on. :) After you've applied the colours, give it just one coat of a good topcoat, so it crackles nicely.

I wanted it to be really bright, so I picked as many neon colours as I could. 4 out of 6 - that's pretty good! The colours need to be pretty opaque, so I guess I missed on some of the colour picks. The Lime Starts Here need like, 4 layers to look nice! That's also why you should have white nail polish underneath.

I used H&M's Cracked Black as a crackle. Honestly, it's the best crackle polish I've ever tried! It's only a couple of bucks, and it works wonders!

All in all, I'm very satisfied with this manicure. I hope you all enjoyed this post, and I'd love to hear your opinions on it! :)

Electric blue with microshimmer

This blue beauty is from the Poptastic Collection from Summer 2010, but I bought it online only recently so it’s still around. I’ve some people have written that it’s a one coater, but that wasn’t the case for me. I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t apply the polish thickly enough - I don’t think so, because this polish’ formula doesn’t invite putting it on in thick coats. It’s pretty easy to apply though, and it took two coats to reach full opacity.

I love Color Club polishes. It’s so seldom they let me down. There was one thing that made me wonder – and that was the smell of this. It doesn’t smell particularly bad, just really weird! In fact I went online to check if it happened to be one of these scented polishes, but it isn’t. So I don’t know what’s up with this, but it definitely smells different to the other Color Clubs I own – and I do own quite a few. :)

Anyway – let’s move to the pic. Here it is!

I don’t wear any top coat on that pic, because I already knew that I wanted to stamp on the Trippie Hippie. I chose a star design from a fauxnad plate called KD3, and I used Essence’s stampy polish “Stamp me! Silver”.

After a coat of Seche Vite top coat I was ready to go.

I love stars, so this mani is *so* me!!

Holographic Glitters Comparison

I love glitters, and it's only a bonus if they're holographic. So I've collected a few polishes that look quite alike. I decided to compare them to see how alike they really are.

I've chosen: 

1. China Glaze - Fairy Dust

2. Inglot - 201

3. Viva la Diva - 72

4. Orly - Prima Gloss Silver

5. Wet n Wild - Kaleidoscope

China Glaze: Fairy Dust, Inglot: 201, Viva la Diva: 72, Orly: Prima Gloss Silver, Wet n Wild: Kaleidoscope

They're all silver holographic glitters, and they all look pretty much alike. But let's see them swapped over a black crème, shall we?

The two that stand out from the others are Inglot and Wet n Wild, that have the strongest holo effect to them.It's funny that it's the most expensive and the cheapest of the bunch that separates themselves from the others.

The last pic shows the size and the density of the glitters. It's blurry to show the holo effect better.

As you can see, number 2 and 5 have the strongest holo - that's Inglot and Wet n Wild. Wet n Wild is also the polish with the biggest sized glitters.

The three others are as close to being dupes as they get, IMO. 

Conclusion: If I was only allowed to buy one holographic glitter, I'd go for the cheapest, namely Wet n Wild. 

But hey - a girl can never have too many holographic glitters! :)

Neon Barbie pink jelly base with tiny blue and purple glass flecks

I don’t wear pink very often – but when I saw this limited edition polish from Essence, I knew I had to have it. It’s pink, very pink...but it’s bright enough to be able to give me the wow-effect that I like so much. And I obviously love the idea of the glass flecks that help the polish shine!

The formula is fine and the brush is good. Applying it was nice’n easy, but the waiting time in between the layers almost *killed* me! It’s a pretty sheer polish – and I could have gone with two coats, but I gave it three for maximum shine and effect.

Here it is in all its pinky prettiness – without top coat:

I knew I couldn’t let it be like that. I found my stamping plates and looked through them, and found a couple of simple flower on my big “H”-plate. I stamped with Essence’s stampy polish “Stamp me! Silver”.

After a bit of more drying time I applied a coat of Seche Vite and I was ready to rock. Or perhaps more ready to pop. :D

Dark blue jelly base with small blue, green and bronze glitters and bigger blue sequins

This polish looks absolutely amazing in the bottle. It’s packed with various colours of small glitters, and has these bigger blue sequins that just make this look fantastic.

The formula was quite thick and lumpy, which made the application quite difficult. I ended up having quite a lot of polish on my cuticles and around my nails. Fortunately it wasn’t that hard to clean it up again.

It was properly opaque in two coats, although the drying time between the coats was on the slow side – probably because the polish is so thick that it’s impossible to apply thin coats.

Here’s how the mani looks with a generous layer of top coat to smooth out the surface somewhat:

It’s a very pretty polish, I really like it. It has such a depth to it! To look at it is like staring into a deep, deep blue and then see glitter. On the negative side is the lumpiness, which I found to be impossible to smooth out. My nails felt like what I guess the surface of the moon must feel like!

Purple duochrome 

When I bought this polish I thought it was just a very shimmery, pretty  purple. I wasn’t aware that it’s actually a duochrome, shifting between two tones of purple. That was a nice surprise.

The formula is great and applies easily. It covered perfectly in two coats and dried pretty fast between the layers.

No top coat yet:

I stamped on it, using Barry M’s “Lilac foil”. It’s a lavender foil, which is perfect for stamping. I didn’t want the stamp to take over the entire manicure, that’s why I didn’t just use plain silver for the stars. I used a stamping plate from Essence.

Here’s how it ended up looking with a generous coat of top coat.

I quite like it. I’ll definitely see if I can get my hands on my L. A. Girl polishes!

Sometimes a polish looks better in the bottle than it does on the nails. I hate it when that happens! With L. A. Color’s Voodoo it’s the other way around: It looks alright in the bottle, but absolutely great on the nails.

Voodoo has a great formula, the polish glided on easily, leaving no streaks or bald spots. It could have been a one coater, had I been more careful with the application. But; I gave it two coats, to be sure that everything was evened out, so to speak.

No top coat yet:

Isn’t it just beautiful? I love the colour and the shimmer in it.

I should have left it like that, but I didn’t. No, I absolutely had to add a new glitter I bought the other day – a Revlon called “Belle”. It’s a silver glitter in various sizes, but in a clear base.

After one coat of that, I had a feeling that I had made a mistake. So I applied a second coat to see if it helped. It didn’t. <sigh> I don’t think I’ve ever said this before, but the glitter was a mistake. It didn’t at all give the bling effect that I was after. It only dulled the original polish.

Here is the finished mani with one coat of no name top coat:

When I bought this polish, I thought it would actually look like the night sky on my finger nails. I’m sorry to say that it turned out not to be.

The formula is OK - not great, but not bad either...just OK. The first coat was on the tricky side because I kept pulling the already applied polish off with the brush. The second coat saved me from all the bald spots and streaks, and I was satisfied with the level of opaqueness.

It really doesn’t live up to its name though. To me it just looks like any other black polish with silver shimmer in it. The “stars” in the sky are not prominent enough for my likings.

Take a look. Two coats, no top coat:

The stars can be arranged though! ;) Attitude themselves made a polish to make up for the missing stars. It’s called Glitter Glam Top Coat and it’s a clear base packed with holographic glitter in different sizes. There’s even square glitters in it!

I applied a coat of that on top, and whoa! Now we’re talking! This top coat is way more holographic than I imagined it would be!

Talk about a million stars in the sky! :D Here’s a blurry picture, so you can see the holographic effect.

The holo effect is so strong that it’s even visible in low lights. I’ve never seen that in a holo before (not that I’ve seen that many, but still…). So. Desired prettiness levels attained, satisfaction achieved!

I bought this mini bottle of green Max Factor polish in Germany. I was actually looking for another Max Factor that nail bloggers are going crazy over at the moment, but it wasn’t there. So I picked this one up instead.

The formula is quite good, but I found it a bit tricky to handle the very small brush. The handle is so short that I felt a bit awkward when I tried to manoeuvre it around. But anyway – I managed to apply two coats of the polish – and I also managed to flip the open bottle over and the brush fell onto the carpet. Grrr!! Fortunately there was only polish where the brush landed on the carpet and on my laptop, and we managed to remove it from both. Phew.

So anyway, enough of the talking, here is the nail polish. Two coats – no top coat yet:

I was in the mood for glitter so I dug out a long forgotten NYX glitter, “Enchanted Forest”.

Application was not very easy at all. The brush really pulled on the glitter, so I had to move the brush around and around on the nails afterwards to spread the glitter out. And I was only lucky enough to find four of the big hexagons – two for each hand. At least that was enough to make them match :)

Another thing about the NYX polish is that it smells really bad. Like strong glue or something. I know that Kleancolor’s polishes have that reputation but this particular NYX is worse!

I gave it two coats of “Enchanted Forest” and a thick layer of a no name top coat and I was ready to rock.

Here’s another one of my Kleancolors. I’m always curious when I try a new one, because I never know whether to expect a fantastic formula or a poor one.

This one happened to be great. The polish glided on easily and had a pretty good coverage. It was almost a one coater, but I gave it two, to even out irregularities. Drying time between the coats is a killer, like it often is with Kleancolor polishes, so I had to put on my patient face, even though patience isn’t one of my strongest assets. :D

What’s with the name, anyway? I’ve never seen a grape in a colour like this!

I stamped on it, using a no name polish from Bornprettystore called “Suzy skis in the Pyrenees”, which is a deep, velvety purple with a suede finish. I wonder where they get their names? Anyway, the polish is thick and pretty opaque, and therefore good for stamping. The stamping plate is called H22. I applied one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Here’s the result:

It’s more subtle in real life than it appears on the picture, but I quite like it.
