Comparison: Holo topcoats

Comparison: Holo topcoats
Ellagee: Rainbow Syrup; Starrily: Eclipse; Dance Legend: Top Prismatic; Lacquester: Holo Dek 14-35

A good friend of mine told me that Starrily’s Eclipse should be the second best holo topcoat there is. I think Ellagee’s Rainbow Syrup is the best but I bought the Starrily to see if it should be any better than my beloved Rainbow Syrup.

I decided to compare four of my holo toppers:

Ellagee: Rainbow Syrup; Starrily: Eclipse;
Dance Legend: Top Prismatic; Lacquester: Holo Dek 14-35

First on swatch sticks, over black. The picture is taken with flash:

Ellagee: Rainbow Syrup; Starrily: Eclipse;
Dance Legend: Top Prismatic; Lacquester: Holo Dek 14-35

Dance Legend has the strongest linear effect, but Lacquester’s total effect is stronger – it’s just a mix of linear and scattered. Ellagee’s linear effect is a little bit stronger than Starrily’s.

Ellagee: Rainbow Syrup; Starrily: Eclipse;
Dance Legend: Top Prismatic; Lacquester: Holo Dek 14-35

This picture is taken in low lights to show you how much the top coats dull the black. It’s clear to see that the stronger the effect, the more it dulls the base colour. Lacquester dulls the most but has also got the strongest effect. Dance Legend comes in second, while Ellagee and Starrily dulls equally little.

I’m not really interested in having my base colours dulled, so I tried Ellagee and Starrily side by side on my nails.

The competitors:

I used a bright turquoise from Golden Rose as my base. This is two coats of #39:

I applied one coat of holo topcoat. The pinkie and the ring finger has got Ellagee on them; the middle finger and the pointer has got Starrily on them.

Pinkie and ring finger: Ellagee; Middle finger and pointer: Starrily

It’s not obvious but Ellagee’s effect is a fraction stronger.

Conclusion:
The stronger effect, the more grey. I prefer my base colours to stay as true to their nature as possible so my favourite holo topper is still Ellagee’s Rainbow Syrup, closely followed by Starrily’s Eclipse.

  1. This was interesting! I think I have two holo toppers for the moment, one home made and one from Darling Diva. They booth dull the polish underneath a little bit if I'm not mistaking.

  3. I like the Ellagee a lot, I remember this holo topper. I also like DL and Lacquester but it all depends on which effect you want to achieve.

    1. Exactly! Shimmer polishes can handle more dullness than cremes in my opinion :)
