Summer Challenge Day 20: Water Marbled

Summer Challenge Day 20: Water Marbled

Water Marbling is the most difficult mani in this challenge imo. I’ve never tried it before. Stay tuned to found out if I’ll ever do it again ;)

I started out by painting my nails white with Models Own “Snow White", which is a plain white crème. I wanted to use it as underwear for these three polishes:

China Glaze: Rodeo Fanatic, 108 degrees, Stella

I deliberately chose three polishes from the same brand to make sure that the polishes wouldn’t clash in the process. I used room temperature ordinary tap water added three drops of polish remover, because I read somewhere that it would be good.

And then I started putting drops of polish into the water. Pretty soon the drops stopped spreading out like they’re supposed to. I made my pattern in the water with an orange stick, and then I dipped my nails into the water, two nails at a time.

Here’s the final result:

After a couple of minutes the polish started making little bubbles from underneath, leaving white blobs all over my nails. If any of you know the reason, I would love to hear it!

And here’s my thumb nail, that’s the one I liked the best!

All in all I don’t consider this a success, but I thought that I’d give it another go just to see if that would turn out just as badly.

This time I used these three polishes:

Finger Paints: Vintage Violet, Sinful Colors: Folly, Essence: Style for Summernights
Same water, same temperature, same tools and same method. Drip, drip, drip, polish into the water, make a pattern with an orange stick and dip the nails. I made more drips this time to see if I could get the pattern to be more “water marble-ish”.

And here’s how it ended up looking like:

 Another shot of it:

So, is water marbling something that I enjoyed trying? No, it’s not. I find it too time consuming and I feel that it’s a huge waste of polish.
Is it my style? No, it’s too random for me, and too difficult to make a nice pattern.
Will I try it again? Yeah, probably once or twice more, just because I can.

Have you tried water marbling? If yes, are you good at it? Please share your secret! :)

There are other Danish girls who also tried to water marble today. You should definitely check their blogs out to see what they came up with.

Stay tuned the day after tomorrow - same bat time, same bat channel – for nails inspired by a colour! I promise it’ll be very interesting to see how I interpret that!

  1. Kan bedst li den sidste. Men gir dig fuldstændig ret! Jeg hader virkelig også denne trend! :)

  2. Water marbling is time consuming, but I still love it, because the result is always so cool and different. Love your manis, too. I didn´t know that few drops of nail polish is good for water marbling. I have to try it next time.

    1. I haven't tried it without the drop of polish remover, but the water here is very "hard", so I thought I'd give it a go. And thanks - it's sweet of you :)

  3. I think you did really well here. I tried it once, ages ago, but my polish didn't spread, it just sank to the bottom of the bowl. I don't know what I did wrong. But I will definitely try again.

    1. I also had a few polishes that just sank like little pearls of nail polish on the bottom of the glass - it was very weird :D

  4. I like the second result the best, maybe because 108 degrees is too sheer for WM.
I never tried WM, but I have read that bubbles come if you pull out too quickly.
I have watched a lot of videos, and apparently you also need to find polishes that both work well for WM and together.

    1. Ha, too quickly out of the water, that sounds exactly right! I'm not very patient, so I have no problems believing that is true ;)

  5. Ja, gir dig så meget ret - det er spild af lak og lige netop alt for "random" til min smag (og din) :-) Så kan vi bare glæde os over at vi har lidt friere tøjler til de sidste designs - det bliver fedt! :-)

  6. I've never heard of putting polish remover in the water...maybe it'd be easier to start with smoother, creme polishes without any shimmer? Personally, the two things I did that helped me the most when I was trying to figure out water marbles were to make sure I wasn't in the way of the air conditioner vent (it was blowing on the water, making the polishes start getting thick before they'd spread) and to change the water after every couple of nails (to keep random particles of polish from gunking up the water).

    1. Sounds like two good bits of advice, thank you so much. I did actually notice that the water looked a bit yucky after two sets of dips in it! I didn't change it though - perhaps I should have.

  7. I've tried water marbling too and all my results were pretty much similar to your first try - full of bubbles. And I find it too much time consuming too, so I probably won't try it again so soon. :) But you really should, because your next try was much better and I bet the third time you'll get a perfect manicure! :)

  9. For something you don't do very often, I think your marbling turned out great! :D I don't do marbling for the same reasons you mentioned: it takes too much time and polish.

      Og tak!! :)

  11. You did really well with this I think. Water marbling is hard to get right, I can never get it perfect. The second attempt looks really good so well done you!

    1. And it is indeed both. Plus you're using way too much of the precious drops of nail polish!
