OPI DS Original

OPI DS Original (Designer Series)
Light plum linear holographic

Sunshine! That calls for holographic nailpolish! I’ve got quite a few in swaps recently, so I actually had a hard time deciding which one to try on first!! I went for OPI DS Original from their Designer Series. I’ve read so much about it, so I was dying to try it on. I had read that no special base coat was necessary, so I just slapped on my Miss Sporty base coat.

Application was easy, the polish just glided on. It was on the sheer side, so I kind of regretted that I hadn’t used some kind of coloured underwear for it. But I thought that this way I could see what this polish was really about. I ended up applying three coats. I didn’t have any problems with pulling on already applied polish or bald spots or anything. Easy peasy!! I didn’t apply a topcoat, because I’ve read that it dulls the holo effect, and that’s the last thing I wanted.

And look at how is makes little rainbows in the sunshine!

I took about a million pictures to make sure that some of them would actually show the beauty of this polish:

Let me show you another reason why I regretted not having used this as a layering polish:

It’s so dull when it’s out of the sunshine, and too pale to look good with my skin tone.

Something weird happened later! I was applying some oil on my hands, and rubbed it in around my cuticles, like I do every evening. But the polish obviously didn’t like that, because the polish went all tacky and weird, and it dulled the holo effect more than any top coat could possibly have done! So I think that I’ll apply a top coat next time, in order to be able to rub oil into my hands :)

Have any of you experienced that holographic (or any other) nail polish didn’t work very well with subsequent use of hand creams/oils/lotions? I’m really curious to hear if I’m the first one experiencing this.

The verdict:
Opacity: 5/10
Colour, prettiness: 10/10
Durability: N/A/10
Value for money: 8/10
Overall: 7.6/10
Buy again: Yes

  1. I've heard, don't know if it's true, that matte colors or matte tc is ruined by hand cream.

    1. No mattes are not ruined by hand cream, well maybe some, but the ones I use don't do this. Mark that I always use hand cream aftre washing my hands. I own an Avon matte polsih and a mattyfing top coat from Miss Sporty.

    2. I don't use a lot of matte, but I haven't experienced any probs with mattes and hand creams either.

    3. I know when the OPI Suedes came out, the tag that came on it warned not to use a base coat, top coat or lotion.

I always used a base coat and lotion anyway and didn't have any problems.

    4. Ah okay, that makes sense that my mani went all rubber-y and weird then. I will however, use a top coat next time, and will also keep you posted about how that went :)

  2. I've had something similar happen before - It happened several years ago when I used a suntan lotion a few hours after getting a manicure. I know they used a top coat but I dont remember which brand it was.

    1. Ha, that's really weird. This happened a couple of hours after applying the polish.

  3. Weird thing....
I always use Seche Vite on holos, and I have tested and tested - absolutely no change in the holo effect, also not after creams or oils...

    1. I'll do that in future too then, because it felt really weird having "rubbery/tacky" nails after that.

    1. I guess I'll have to practice some more, to see if it was a one time only experience.

  7. Jeg elsker holo. Men de skal opleves IRL :-)
Meget mystisk at den ændrede sig... Man skulle jo mene at den er "lukket" når den er hærdet... Har aldrig haft spøgelser i mine lakker :-D

    1. Det er også det første spøgelse, jeg oplever. Jeg håber meget, at det kun bliver boende i netop dén lak, og ikke flytter fra lak til lak :D

  8. Gorgeous holo! :D Yikes about the cuticle oil messing up the polish. I'll definitely have to remember that.

  10. I really would love to find this nail polish at a reasonable cost. It is just too expensive on eBay.

    1. I just checked, and yes, it seems like the only way the price goes is up :(
